November 19, 2013

SARASOTA -- The husband of former U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris apparently committed suicide early Tuesday, according to Sarasota police.

Between 7:30 and 8 a.m., police responded to the couple's residence in the 1400 block of Bay Point Drive, where they found the body of Sven Anders Axel Ebbeson, 68.

"At this time, we're asking the media to respect the privacy of the family," said the family's pastor, William Hild of First Baptist Church of Sarasota, said in a statement issued by police. "Mr. Ebbeson was recently suffering from an illness. The family is asking for privacy, prayers, thoughts and love from the community."

Police Chief Bernadette DiPino added: "We're asking the community respect the family at this difficult time. Mrs. Harris wanted the community, her family and friends to know that her husband is no longer suffering."

Harris also is a former Florida secretary of state.
