Russia's Andrey Rublev wins tennis singles title at IMG Academy Futures

HERALD STAFF REPORTNovember 18, 2013

BRADENTON -- From the start of the main draw on Tuesday until Sunday, the 2013 IMG Academy Futures, a USTA Pro Circuit event, had been marked by long, grueling matches.

It was fitting that the final between Latvia's Martin Podzus and Russia's Andrey Rublev would go the distance in a nearly three-hour battle. It was a contest that pitted Podzus' intense power and Rublev's finesse. Ultimately, Rublev's finesse overcame his powerful opponent. Podzus dominated the first set, but lost momentum in the second.

The second set came down to a tie-break, and Podzus charged out to a 5-0 advantage, before Rublev came back to win the tie break. In the final set, Rublev prevailed, 3-6, 7-6(6), 6-3.

The IMG Academy Futures tournament in Bradenton featured 32 singles players and a 16-team doubles field. The doubles title was decided on Friday when the duo of Sekou Bangoura and Stefan Kozlov defeated Tommy Mylnikov and Devin McCarthy, 6-2, 6-4.
