Lakewood Ranch swimmers Madison Jean and Eric Erlenmeyer turned in runner-up performances, and the Mustangs boys team finished fourth Friday at the Class 3A state championships in Stuart.

Buoyed by strong relay teams and several top-eight finishes, the Lakewood Ranch boys scored 159 points, six behind third-place Venice. Miami Belen Jesuit and Gainesville finished first and second, respectively.

The Lakewood Ranch girls came in 10th as a team.

"They did amazingly well," first-year Lakewood Ranch head coach Matt Polk said of the boys and girls teams. "I was very proud of them. We faced a lot of tough schools.

"Considering where Lakewood Ranch has been, this was a great finish. It was a heckuva meet to coach in."

Jean, who entered the state meet as the top seed in the 100-yard butterfly, came in second in the event finals by eight-hundredths of a second in a time of 55.47 seconds. Kayla Tennant of Naples Gulf Coast won in 55.39.

"She swam her race," Polk said. "She knows she's just a sophomore. That will give her more motivation in the years to come."

Jean followed up her butterfly performance with a fourth-place finish in the

100 backstroke in 58.25 seconds.

Erlenmeyer, who was seeded sixth in the 100 backstroke after the morning preliminaries, came in second in 52.39 seconds. Boleck De Pawlikowski of Miami Belen Jesuit won the event in 50.13.

The top eight finishers in the morning preliminaries advanced to the championship finals. Those who placed nine through 16 advanced to the consolation finals.

Lakewood Ranch's Luke Hanner placed fifth in the 200 freestyle championship finals in 1:41.96 and seventh in the 100 butterfly in 51.17 seconds. Eric Erlenmeyer came in sixth in the 50 freestyle in 21.42. Daniel Erlenmeyer finished eighth in the 500 freestyle in 4:38.18.

The boys 400 freestyle relay team finished fourth, the 200 medley relay team was sixth, and the 200 freestyle relay came in sixth. The girls 400 freestyle relay finished sixth.

Among Lakewood Ranch swimmers who competed in the consolation finals, Sydney Panzarino was 11th in the 100 freestyle (53.87) and 11th in the 100 backstroke (59.91), Courtney Chapin came in 16th in the 100 freestyle (55.17) and 14th in the 100 backstroke (1:00.27), and the girls 200 medley relay team was ninth in 1:53.72.
