Prep swimming: Bayshore freshman fifth at state meet

Bayshore's Theodore Smith had a fine first showing at the Class 2A state meet.

The Bruins' freshman took fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (4 minutes, 41.47 seconds) and 11th in the 200 individual medley (2:02.72) Saturday in Stuart, as Bayshore finished in a four-way tie for 27th with 20 points.

ELSEWHERE -- Lakewood Ranch's Madison Jean will be the top seed in the 100-yard butterfly at the Class 3A state meet on Friday in Stuart. State berths were announced Sunday. The Lakewood Ranch boys, coming off team titles at the district and region meets, will be led by its 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay teams (seeded second) and 200 medley relay team (seeded third). Individuals Luke Hanner (200 freestyle, 100 butterfly) and Eric Erlenmeyer (100 backstroke) lead the way with fifth seeds. Ryan Walker of Braden River is seeded seventh in the 50 freestyle.
