100-mph chase ends at Manatee-Hillsborough county line

November 9, 2013

— A high-speed chase after a stolen car from Manatee County into Hillsborough County ended when Hillsborough deputies ended their pursuit Saturday morning, authorities said.

A Manatee County Sheriff's Office deputy spotted the stolen vehicle, a tan Buick LeSabre, heading north on U.S. 301 at 63rd Avenue East just before 2:30 a.m., according to a report. The car's driver "immediately began to flee" from the deputy, who began a pursuit, the report states.

The vehicle turned west on 30th Avenue East and then north on Ninth Street East as backup units joined the pursuit.

The driver then continued on to U.S. 301 North/U.S. 41 North, running several red lights, and entered Hillsborough County, according to the report.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office was notified of the pursuit, but authorities there "would not give approval to their units to pursue the vehicle." Manatee deputies ended their pursuit and turned around.

Deputies deployed "stop sticks" at two locations, but the car was able to evade them both times. The chase reached speeds of up to 105 mph and lasted about 14 minutes, Manatee authorities said.

No vehicles were damaged and no one was injured.
