Saint Stephen's Berdusco returns to state swim meet

BRADENTON -- The state swimming and diving championships are becoming habitual for Ellie Berdusco.

The Saint Stephen's junior will make her fifth state appearance Friday during the Class 1A meet at the Sailfish Splashpark Aquatics Athletic Center in Stuart, competing in three events.

Yet this year feels a little different for Berdusco: She's a defending state champion in the 500-yard freestyle.

"I wouldn't say it's pressure," she said Thursday. "It's more of an excitement -- I get to defend my title in the 500 and swim in the 200 (freestyle)."

Berdusco is seeded second (4:56.57) in the 500 behind Katie Duggan (4:54.16) of Orlando Lake Highlands Prep. Duggan took fifth in the 500 last year.

Berdusco is seeded fifth in the 200.

"I would definitely say I'm more confident going into this one," she said, "especially with last year's experience.

"I've just been doing what I've always been doing. I've got a great club coach in (Sarasota Sharks') Steve Brown and a great high school coach in Lee Cucchi. They've prepared me well, like they always have, and it's just part of the routine."

That routine includes practice six days a week with the Sharks, including twice a day Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

"It's always rewarding when your hard work pays off," said Berdusco, who plans to swim in college and has taken a trip to Notre Dame. "It's nice to see the positive effects."

Berdusco also qualified for the state meet with the Falcons' 200 relay team, which also includes Kristen Brockett, Kristi Schleicher and Lauri Schleicher.

Out-of-Door Academy's Joe Plechy qualified in the 50 freestyle and Joie Eckard qualified in the 500 freestyle.

The Class 2A meet is set for Saturday and includes

Bayshore freshman Theodore Smith, a qualifier in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle.

Lakewood Ranch and Braden River will be well represented during Saturday's Class 3A-Region 3 meet at North Shore Pool in St. Petersburg.

The Mustang boys won the district title last week and the girls took third, while Braden River's girls and boys teams placed fourth.

The Class 3A and 4A state meets are scheduled for next weekend in Stuart.
