Palmetto shooting incident ends peacefully in arrest

November 7, 2013

PALMETTO — A domestic disturbance concluded Thursday with no injuries and an arrest, but not before 10 SWAT members from the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, along with a hostage negotiation team, had to respond to a quiet Palmetto neighborhood.

Allen Matthews, 48, while inside his home alone in the 3100 block of 8th Street Court East, fired a gun in the residence and then would not come out of the house or answer the phone until a family member was able to negotiate a peaceful surrender, according to Dennis Dummer of the sheriff’s office.

Matthews was taken to the Manatee County jail and charged with domestic battery and discharging a firearm in a reckless manner, Dummer said. He also faces a charge of using a gun while under the influence of alcohol and introducing contraband into the jail, according to the jail website.

He was being held without bond at the jail.

The roughly 90-minute incident began at 6:15 p.m., Dummer said.
