He's now a sitcom star and a game show host, but Cedric Antonio Kyles started out as a stand-up-comedian.
Or actually, he started out as a claims adjuster for State Farm Insurance and then entered and won a stand-up comedy contest and changed his name to Cedric the Entertainer.
These days, Cedric is best-known for his work on TV -- he's the star and executive producer of "The Soul Man" on TV Land and the current host of the long-running game show "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" -- and for his roles in the "Barbershop" movies.
But he's always done stand-up, and in fact he's been quoted as saying that's still one of the things he enjoys the most.
He'll be bring his stand-up act to St. Petersburg on Friday, Nov. 8, when he performs at the Mahaffey Theater.
After he won that stand-up contest, Cedric started performing in local comedy clubs and by the early '90s he was performing stand-up on national television. He appeared on "It's Showtime at the Apollo "and "Def Comedy Jam." In 1994 he won BET's Richard Pryor Comic of the Year Award By 1996, he had turned to acting with his breakout role on "The Steve Harvey Show."
