A short distance down the beach, contestants were madly creating pieces of art in a sand sculpture competition as pirates in the park area were har-dee-harr-ing and making captures Saturday at Coquina Beach.

On this short stretch of beach the entertainment was a phalanx of shore birds; plenty of entertainment for one small boy.

Running, screeching happily, he swooped among the darting birds, thrilled as they lifted into the air, darting and gliding against the backdrop of the Gulf waves.

Skimmers and gulls seemed to reflect the boy's happiness as they took to the air in a game that continued until the boy tired and rejoined his family.
