Marlins pick up option on P Turner

Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - The Miami Marlins exercised their 2014 option on pitcher Jacob Turner, the team announced Thursday.

The former top prospect will earn $1 million for the coming season and is coming off a 2013 campaign in which he established career bests in virtually every category.

Turner established himself as a mainstay in Miami's rotation by posting a 3.74 earned run average over 20 starts, though he produced only a 3-8 record for a Marlins team that finished last in the NL at 62-100.

The 22-year-old was acquired by Miami from Detroit in July of 2012 as part of the trade that sent pitcher Anibal Sanchez to the Tigers. Detroit took Turner with the ninth overall pick of the 2009 MLB Draft and signed the right-hander to a major league contract shortly after the selection.
