SARASOTA -- A Sarasota man is facing charges of exploiting his mother, after stealing thousands of dollars from her to pay for his pain pill addiction, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.

Michael Dion, 50, was arrested Wednesday and is charged with exploitation of an elderly person for more than $20,000, according to an arrest report.

The Department of Children and Families received a report that Dion took his mother to the bank on Oct. 17 and asked to withdraw more than $12,000 from her IRA, according to the report.

"The victim appeared confused and when asked what she wanted done with the money she told bank staff to just do what her son said," the detective wrote in the report.

Bank staff later found that more than $13,000 had been taken from the mother's CD and deposited into her account. Additional review that that $600 had been removed from the account each day since Aug. 15, totaling more $22,000.

When investigators from DCF and the sheriff's office arrived at the home where Dion and his mother reside, he claimed to not feel well and requested an ambulance be sent, according to the report. While waiting he admitted to spending $600 a day to buy Oxycontin and Xanax pills from a friend and that his mother was unaware of his drug abuse problem due to her dementia, the sheriff's office said.
