Local briefs: Second Chance Prom to benefit needy seniors

Prom eventto benefit area seniors

BRADENTON -- Senior Advocacy Council's Second Chance Prom will be from 6-11 p.m. March 1 with proceeds helping needy seniors of Manatee County.

The dining and dancing event is at the Central Manatee Banquet Hall, 509 Ninth St. E.

The event will feature complimentary cocktails, butler-passed heavy hors d'oeuvres, carving stations and dessert. Tickets are $50 pre-sale, $75 at the door. To purchase tickets call 941-779-4799.

All net proceeds will benefit Manatee County Senior Advocacy Council Inc., an organization that grants the wishes of senior citizens with threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.

Bird-watching class announced for January

MANATEE -- Reservations are being taken for the 2014 beginning bird-watching course offered by Manatee County Audubon Society, which includes four classes: Jan. 17, Jan. 23, Jan. 27 and Jan. 30. Each class begins at 6:3O p.m. and lasts until 9 p.m. All are held at the First United Methodist Church of Palmetto, 330 11th Ave., W.

Also included are two full-day field trips, which begin at 7 a.m. Jan. 25 and Feb. 1. About 100 bird species are expected to be seen and identified on the two field trips, including painted buntings, the signature bird of Felts Audubon Preserve.
