EAST MANATEE -- Braden River Middle School students are sending a special message to troops who will be overseas for the holidays this year: We haven't forgotten about you.

Students in Braden River Middle's after-school program, coordinated by the Manatee County Y, spend Tuesday afternoon creating holiday cards for American military service members.

They made about 450 cards to send to troops who won't be home for the holidays -- many of whom don't otherwise receive cards while they are deployed, said Linda Ducor, a Y volunteer who headed the effort.

The cards created by a handful of Braden River Middle students will be sent to Massachusetts to be dispensed by Operation Christmas Cards, a nonprofit that began as a Facebook movement in 2009.
