BRADENTON -- Playing in a region tournament is nothing new to Manatee's volleyball team.
After all, Wednesday's Class 8A-Region 2 quarterfinal marks its sixth appearance in the playoffs since 2005.
What makes this so special, however, is the location -- the Hurricanes (19-8) will be home at 7 p.m. against Bloomingdale Valrico after they won the District 8 championship last week at Palm Harbor University, which was the tournament's top seed.
Manatee was the third seed.
The last five runner-up finishes forced Manatee to travel, with last year's team making the trek across the state to Stuart Martin County.
Not this time.
"I'm looking forward to hosting it at home," said Manatee coach Rachel Batey, "and having that home crowd there."
The winner advances to the region semifinals Tuesday, Nov. 5, against either Tampa Plant or Palm Harbor University.
Regional play of any sort has been a long time coming for Bayshore, which hadn't gone to the tournament since 1987. The Bruins (11-11) end
ed that drought in style last week, defeating rival Southeast for the Class 5A-District 10 championship and securing a regional home game 7 p.m. Tuesday against Tampa Middleton.
The Seminoles (6-17) also advanced and head to Tampa Robinson, the District 9 champion, tonight. The winners of each game meet Nov. 5 in a semifinal.
One team used to not only regional play but playing the role of host is Lakewood Ranch, which clinched its third consecutive title by beating Sarasota in the finals of the Class 7A-District 10 tournament.
The Mustangs (22-5) host Seminole on Tuesday and with a win play either Clearwater or the Sailors next week in a region semifinal.
Out-of-Door Academy gets to stay in the cozy confines of the Petrik Thunderdome after winning the Class 3A-District 10 title there last week at the expense of rival Cardinal Mooney, which was the tournament's No 1. seed.
The Thunder (14-5) host Clearwater Calvary Christian on Tuesday, while the Cougars (12-10) head over the Sunshine Skyway for a meeting with Clearwater Central Catholic.
Winners of next week's region semifinals advance to the region finals 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9. The state semifinals and finals will be played at the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, beginning Tuesday, Nov. 12.
