PALMETTO -- A family of four was sleeping when a police car came crashing into their home early Saturday morning, according to Palmetto Police.

Palmetto Police officer Lucciano Diaz was transporting an arrestee to Manatee County jail at about 5:30 a.m. Saturday in the 2000 block of Eighth Avenue West in Palmetto when another car struck his police cruiser, causing it to crash into the living room of a home, according to Palmetto Police Sgt. Robert Johnson.

A mother, grandmother and 13-year-old and 15-year-old daughters were not injured. Diaz, the arrestee and the occupants of the other vehicle were all transported to local hospital to be treated for minor injures. Everyone but Diaz has since been released. Diaz is being kept for observation, but his injuries do not appear to be serious or life threatening.

The American Red Cross was notified by police and has aided the home in finding temporary shelter.

Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, and charges may be forthcoming for the other driver.

City of Palmetto and Manatee County building officials and fire rescue responded to the scene.

"We wanted to make sure the building was sound enough after the impact," Johnson said.
