Cell phone images lead to 18 sexual battery charges for Sarasota man

October 24, 2013

MANATEE — A 24-year-old Sarasota man has been charged with 18 counts of sexual battery after authorities reportedly discovered images on a cell phone of a young child performing a sex act in Palmetto.

Nathaniel Holland was arrested at 8 p.m. Friday in the 700 block of Orange Avenue, Sarasota, according to a Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office arrest report.

The crime took place at noon Dec. 8, 2012, in Palmetto, the report states.

Authorities learned of the crime when a witness came to the Bradenton Police Department 10 days ago with a phone purchased on the street containing child pornography images, according to the report.

The child, whose age has not been released, had been identified through the phone image Oct. 18, and authorities interviewed the child’s mother.

Shown five images, the mother identified Holland.

Holland reportedly told authorities he had assaulted the child three time, and the cell phone images were the only ones he had taken of the child, the report states.

Holland also said he told the child that if the child said anything he would, “go away,” according to the report.

Holland told reportedly law enforcement he was sorry and ashamed.

Holland’s charges include capital sexual battery, possession of child pornography, promotion of sexual performance by a child and unlawful use of a cell phone, the report indicates.

Holland was in custody in Sarasota on Thursday on bonds totaling $875,000 according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.
