BRADENTON -- It appears that Bradenton is full of people jonesing for java because Starbucks is building another coffee shop here.
Starbucks is looking to build a new coffee shop with a drive-thru on the corner of 14th St West and 53rd Avenue, less than a mile away from its store on 14th Street West and Cortez Road, according to plans filed with Manatee County Government.
Development company 5234 14th St. LLC wants to build the java joint at what will be called Woodland Plaza, across from competitor Dunkin' Donuts. The 6,783-square-foot building is divided into five retail/commercial units. The Starbucks would occupy a 1,745-square-foot unit, leaving more than 5,000 square feet left for other retail, according to plans, and provide 38 parking spaces.
A Starbucks spokesperson confirmed with the Herald that the store will have indoor, outdoor seating, a drive-thru and would open in the spring. No additional information about the store was available, according to the spokesperson.
The development company is registered to Vince Payne, who manages companies for Dr. Gary Kompothecras, the founder and owner of medical/lawyer referral
service 1-800-ASK-GARY and board member on the Sarasota-Manatee Airport Authority. Payne did not return a request for comment by deadline Tuesday.
Starbucks has the Bradenton area blanketed with coffee shops, with the latest one on State Route 64 in East Manatee that opened in late August. Other Starbucks locations include Cortez Road, Manatee Avenue West, Manatee Avenue and US 301, 14th St. West, State Route 64, State Route 70, two on University Parkway and Lakewood Ranch Main Street. It's uncertain if the location on Cortez and 14th Street would close in favor of the new location with a drive-thru. A Starbucks spokeswoman did not have additional information about the store and store management directed questions to the corporate office.
Permits have already been issued to contractor Steven Bramley Construction to build the shell of the retail space and shop.
