Oct. 26: Mangrove Coast Fly Fishers and the Sarasota Chapter of Coastal Conservation Association will hold their ninth annual "Fall Fly Fishing Challenge" on Oct. 26. The catch, photo and release, fly fishing only event will feature an Open Division, for guides and anglers fishing with guides (all anglers are eligible to compete in the Open Division), and a Fly Angler Division (no guides). In the Open Division, eligible species include snook, redfish and spotted sea trout. Those in the Fly Angler Division will fish for a variety of species, including snook, redfish, spotted sea trout, bluefish, ladyfish, flounder, snapper, jack crevalle, pompano and permit based on a point-per-inch system. The entry fee is $50 and includes an awards barbecue dinner following the tournament at the Meadows Country Club Community Room, 3101 Longmeadow, Sarasota. There will be an angler meeting at 7:30 p.m. Oct 25 at Harry's Sports Bar and Grill, 6606 S. Nov. 7-Dec. 5: The course "How to Fish in Our Local Waters" will be taught by Capt. Wayne Genthner from 3-4:30 p.m. Thursdays from Nov. 7-Dec.5, excluding Thanksgiving, at The Longboat Key Education Center, 5370 Gulf of Mexico Drive in the Centre Shops of Longboat Key. Capt. Genthner has been a charter guide for more than 18 years and has been fishing local waters for move than three decades. The course will cover topics such as where to fish if you don't have a boat, what you need to know to catch popular fish such as snook, trout, redfish, cobia, tarpon, grouper and snapper in local waters. Nov. 16: CB's Saltwater Outfitters will hold an Orvis-endorsed fly fishing school from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Nov. 16 at Siesta Key. The school will cover fly casting basics, line control, shooting line and the roll cast. Capt. Rick Grassett, a Federation of Fly Fishers certified casting instructor, also will cover leader construction, fly selection and saltwater fly fishing techniques. The course is designed for beginning and intermediate fly casters and will focus on basics, but also will work with intermediate casters on correcting faults and improving casting skills. Jan. 18-19: Registrations are being accepted for the 2014 Manatee County Lacrosse Shoot-Out to be held Jan. 18-19 at Lakewood Ranch. The event is an open club event for all school, recreation and club teams within the Southeast Atlantic region. The tournament features round-robin competition, with all teams guaranteed five games. Competition levels of A and B are available for both boys and girls teams between the ages of 9 and 18. April 6-7: Team registrations are being accepted for the 2014 Lax Max Florida Lacrosse Tournament being held at Lakewood Ranch during the weekend of April 6-7. Lax Max is designed for recreation travel and town team programs within the state of Florida. The event offers a choice of either a one-day, three-game jamboree or a two-day tournament. Lax Max Florida features male and female round-robin competitions, with A, B and C recreation travel competition levels for the dual age groupings of U-10 through U-18.
