The Saint Stephen's Falcons captured the Class 1A-Region 6 prep girls golf title Monday afternoon with a team score of 313 at Golden Gate Country Club in Naples.
The Falcons ran away with the championship. St. John Newman finished in second place with a 352. Sophomore Michelle Yan won medalist honors with a 70. Senior Phoebe Zhau and freshman Venessa Yan each shot an 80. Junior Natalie Pleyrova rounded out the Falcon's winning effort with an 83.
"I'm really proud of our girls," said first year coach Craig Tarbeck. "What really impresses me about this group is their golf maturity. They don't let one bad shot affect the next, they move on mentally and that's tough to do. Especially at their age."
The Falcons, who finished fourth at the state meet last season, will head to Harbor Hills Country Club in Tavares for the state finals being held Oct. 29-30.
CLASS 2A-REGION 7 -- Palmetto (505) and Southeast (535) teams finished seventh and ninth, respectively, at Port Charlotte Country Club and did not advance to state.
Naples Barron Collier (307) and Englewood Lemon Bay (365) moved on to state.
CLASS 1A-REGION 6 -- Bradenton Christian's Philip Knowles is headed back to the state tournament.
The junior shot a 69 at Hideout Golf Club in Naples, grabbing the top individual-qualifier spot to the Class 1A state tournament, to be held Oct. 29 and 30 at Deer Island Golf and Lake Club in Tavares.
Knowles, who finished seventh at last season's state tourney, came in third in the region behind Sarasota Christian's Tony Jiang (65) and Charles Wang (68). The Blazers won the team title with a team score of 291. Community School of Naples came in second at 296. The top two teams and individuals not on qualifying teams advanced to the state.
The Out-of-Door Academy team and individuals Jack Cen of Saint Stephen's and Landry Miller of BCS failed to advance.
CLASS 2A-REGION 7 -- The Palmetto boys team finished ninth with a team score of 396, failing to advance to state at Estero's Stoneybrook Golf Club. The Tigers' Matt Pletcher, who won an individual district championship, tied for eighth with a 78 but did not snag one of the two individual berths to state.
Naples Barron Collier (317) and Englewood Lemon Bay (318) advanced as teams. Local players William Kelly of Southeast and Andrew Kurutz of Bayshore failed to advance as individuals.
