Vin's People: 30th reunion for 1983 Manatee Hurricanes football champs

Were you a player or cheerleader for Manatee High School football's 1983 state championship team?

If so, you will be recognized at the Hurricanes' Oct. 25 game against Fort Lauderdale's University High School.

There will be a 5:30 p.m. reception in the school cafeteria marking the squad's 30th reunion and they will eventually proceed to Hawkins Stadium to welcome the 2013 Canes.

• Sarah and Mike (Popi's) Ameres, parents of Ellie and Chloe, are wed eight years.

• Bayshore High 2012 grad Olivia Trevorrow recently met a genuine American hero. Now a third class (sophomore) midshipman at the Naval Academy, Olivia had her photo taken with Jim Lovell at a Human Space Flight forum. The Annapolis Class of 1952 grad and former NASA astronaut commanded the dramatic Apollo 13 ("Houston, we have a problem") mission.

• Shawna DeLoach Kerley is 39. Again.

• Pastor Joe Connolly had a surprise for 4-year-old Davien Martinez and his mom, Diana Lopez. It was a check for $4,500 from their fellow parishioners at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church.

Davien was shot in the head during a drive-by shooting July 27 and is on a long road to recovery.

While Mom teared up over the money, her resilient son was far more interested in the M&Ms in Father Joe's office.

• Frank Eldridge is 49. Again.

• Palmetto High's Class of 1970 holds its inaugural "Saturday in November" reunion dinner at the Riverhouse Reef & Grill, 995 Riverside Drive, Palmetto, 6:30 p.m. Nov. 2. Contact Chris Billeris-Boast at gboast@tampabay.rr.com for details.

• Sandy Yesnick got an associate of science degree in medical assisting at Keiser University and was a Phi Theta Kappa inductee. She wants a bachelor's degree in psychology next.

• Manatee High hunks vying for Mr. Sugar 'Cane honors Nov. 8 are Joe Andruzzi, Zach Callahan, Logan Gonzalez, Keenan Hill, Kyle Mauk, Nick Pennebacker, Logan Rossi, Andre Sanchez, Landon Thomas, Bobby Tucker, John Wingate and Taylor

• Walt and Charlotte Anderson are wed 50 years. Helping them celebrate are son, Keith, Tom and Sandy Warren, Patty and George Urbanic of Washington, Pa., Mindy and Ron Kimble of Nashville, and Alan and Lavena Shad.

• Joe "Mr. Pecan Pie" Todd is 91 years young.

• Turning Points Executive Director Adell Erozer and Stu Gregory, past chairman and present board member of Goodwill, are among the honorees at Goodwill Manasota's Ambassador of the Year bash p.m. Thursday at Sarasota's Hyatt Regency.
