Los Angeles, CA ( - The Los Angeles Dodgers were awarded outfielder Mike Baxter off waivers from the New York Mets on Thursday.

Baxter appeared in 74 games with the Mets in 2013, but batted just .189 with no home runs and four RBI. New York had outrighted the 28-year-old off the 40- man roster earlier in the week.

The left-handed hitter did post a .263 average with three homers and 17 RBI in 89 games for the Mets the previous season. Over 194 career games with New York and San Diego, Baxter owns a .229 average with 22 doubles, four homers and 26 RBI.

Baxter would not be eligible to play if the Dodgers advance to the World Series.

To make room on the 40-man roster, Los Angeles designated outfielder Alex Castellanos for assignment.

Castellanos went just 7-for-41 (.171) with two homers in 24 games with the Dodgers over parts of the last two seasons.
