Manatee High's most recent state championship baseball team reunites

October 11, 2013

Players from the 1963 Manatee High baseball team reunited for the 50th anniversary of its state championship Thursday night at Pier 22. The team -- it featured stars Richard and Gary Trapp, Skip Lujack and Charles Willey, along with Jack Hutchinson, the son of former Cincinnati Reds manager Fred Hutchinson -- is responsible for the school's most recent baseball crown. The seniors on the team organized the reunion and were pleased to see the state title trophy waiting for them at the restaurant, a favor from athletic director Joe Kinnan, a 1963 Manatee graduate. "We've never done this before," said John Mallonnee, a senior third baseman on the title team who is an eye surgeon in Fort Pierce. "The team has not been together since 1963. It's unbelievable how quickly time goes by."
