The scoop: When these teams were in the same district and John Sprague was running the Rams program, this was one of the state's best rivalries. ... Off to a 1-4 start, Southeast is trying to regroup with a new quarterback and get some momentum for a run of three straight district games following this contest. ... Southeast has won four straight games in this rivalry since it was renewed in 2009. ... With 3,193 career rushing yards, Courtney Allen needs 519 yards to pass Bayshore's John Garvin and move into the No. 2 spot in Manatee County's career public school rushing list. ... The Noles got a much-needed bye last week after getting smashed 62-0 by Manatee. ... Larry Woodward gave the offense a spark three weeks ago in win over Bayshore when he took over at quarterback. ... Kadarrius Carley is the Noles' big-play receiver with four TD receptions and is averaging 27.13 yards per catch. ... Riverview appears to be a lot better than a 2-2 team. The Rams lost a 14-13 squeaker to a very tough Venice squad and was lambasted 47-0 by Manatee last week, which is nothing to be ashamed about. ... Riverview has one of the area's top running backs in Karan Higdon, who has rushed for 463 yards (7.5 per carry). ... The Rams don't throw much. Quarterback Richie James has completed 13 of 22 passes for 104 yards and one TD with one interception. ... This game should show how much Southeast has improved.

The scoop: After a 1-9 dreadful season a year ago, Braden River is the area's feel good story of the year. Pirates head coach Curt Bradley has done a masterful job in instilling confidence in a program that has been rocked by so many head coaches leaving. ... After struggling in a loss to Booker, quarterback Dusty Peebles was back on target last week, throwing three touchdown passes in leading the Pirates to a much-needed 30-27 district win over Sarasota. ... The Pirates' offense still centers around Titus Humphrey (4.5 yards per carry), and Justin Ross is one of the area's most electrifying receivers. ... Linebacker Marcus Balliette is all over the field with a team-high 60 tackles. ... Bayshore is coming off a key 33-14 Class 5A-District 13 victory over Arcadia DeSoto on the road. ... Quarterback Wesley Jackson was the catalyst, running for two scores and throwing for two touchdowns. ... The game showed maturity for the Bruins, who squandered a 31-0 lead the previous week in a loss to Palmetto. ... They are getting big plays on both sides of the ball from Obi Tarwoe in the secondary and at receiver. ... Dereck Williams sparks the ground game, averaging a tidy 6.9 yards per carry. Bruins first-year coach Elijah Freeman has instilled life into this program, making this an interesting non-district matchup between two young upstart coaches. ... Fireworks could erupt in this one.

Lake Minneola (2-3)at IMG Academy (6-0)
Time: 7:30 p.m.
The scoop: The Hawks make the trek down from central Florida riding a three-game losing streak and would love to spoil the Ascenders' unbeaten season. Lake Minneola possesses a balanced offense (195.4 YPG passing and 142.2 YPG rushing), but doesn't have one standout running back, rather doing things in a committee-type fashion. ... IMG is second in the area in total offense (394.8 YPG) and third in rushing defense (103.7 YPG). RB Bo Scarbrough continues his dominance, and is closing in on 1,000 rushing yards in his lone season in Florida high school football. Scarbrough's 221 rushing yards and two TDs last week led the Ascenders to a blowout 35-7 victory over traditional power Miami Monsignor Pace and now the senior headed to Alabama is averaging 10.4 yards per carry.

Bradenton Christian(3-3, 1-3 Class 2A-District 5)at St. Petersburg Northside Christian (1-4, 0-2)

The scoop: The Panthers are reeling and do not look like a playoff caliber team. ... However, BCS gets a Northside Christian squad that is fighting for its chance to escape the cellar of the standings in Class 2A-District 5. ... BCS' run defense is struggling, giving up 191 yards a game. ... The Mustangs are coached by former Tampa Bay Bucs star Mike Alstott. ... Northside's defense has some holes when defending the run as evidenced by the five rushing TDs it allowed in a September loss to Largo Indian Rocks Christian. ... If Panthers slot receiver/tailback Sinclair Laskett return this week (out injured the last two weeks), BCS should roll in this one.

ODA's inability to make open-field tackles has created a learning curve for the youthful squad that boasts freshmen as 75 percent of the roster. ... That's led to some porous defense as the players get used to the schemes and speed of varsity football, and so far the run unit has been gouged for a 236.3 yards a game, which is an area-worst.

Cardinal Mooney welcomed back last year's leading tackler, junior linebacker Tyler Garris, against Tampa Catholic. He was sidelined at the beginning of the season by an ankle injury. ... RB Demardre Patterson has rushed for 370 yards in three games for the Cougars. He has scored five touchdowns. ... The Cougars and Barons would have had a common opponent in St. Petersburg Admiral Farragut, but Cardinal Mooney's Sept. 6 matchup against the Bluejackets was postponed by bad weather.
