Manatee woman charged with DUI after crashing while texting

October 10, 2013

MANATEE — Hilarie Jackson of the 8900 block of 12th Avenue Northwest reportedly told authorities investigating an accident at 11:24 p.m. Wednesday that she was on her cell phone while driving and slammed into a mail box in a Manatee County neighborhood.

“I was texting and driving,” she reportedly told Manatee County Sheriff’s Office deputies who responded to the crash in the 8700 block of 11th Avenue Place NW.

A deputy reported Jackson had a strong odor of alcohol on her breath as she spoke. At one point she nearly fell backward, the report states.

A deputy reported the 2004 Volvo wagon Jackson was driving had substantial damage to the driver’s side and front end and the mail box post was shattered with pieces strewn all over. The grass on the homeowner’s lawn was also torn up.

Jackson reportedly tried to make a call during the crash investigation and again, later, during the criminal investigation for driving under the influence.

Jackson said, “I am going to get my phone,” when a deputy began the criminal investigation and asked her not to leave.

Jackson was placed in handcuffs and charged with driving under the influence with property damage and resisting or interfering with law enforcement, according to the report.

Jackson was released Thursday from the Manatee County jail after posting a $1,000 bond, according to the Manatee County jail website.
