Kinnan voted state's top coach by readers
Manatee's Joe Kinnan was voted Florida's best high school football coach in USA Today's Best High School Coach contest.
The venerable football coach earned 28,490 votes. Lakeland's Bill Castle took second with 20,807.
"It's a tribute to our school, our program, our assistant coaches and our players," Kinnan said.
Kinnan is qualified for the regional round, and voting began at noon Wednesday.
Winners of the regional round then move on to the national round.
The athletic department of the coach crowned tops in the nation will receive $2,000.
Manatee heads to Palmetto on Friday.
OUT-OF-DOOR ACADEMY 3, SOUTHEAST 0 -- Natalie Buffett paced the visiting Thunder with 15 kills and 13 perfect passes in a 25-19, 25-14, 25-20 victory over the Seminoles.
Taylor Albano had nine kills, and Samantha Emmons pitched in with eight kills for ODA (11-2). Cameron Graham added 23 digs and eight aces.
Southeast (5-13) got 10 kills and 11 digs from Emma Bartges. Emma Rissman added six kills, and Lacey Sanchez passed out 24 assists.
MANATEE 178, SOUTHEAST 236 -- Sai Gadam led the way with a 41 as the visiting Hurricanes (5-6-1) defeated the Seminoles at The River Club.
William Kelly led Southeast (0-8) with a 44.
LAKEWOOD RANCH 208, SOUTHEAST 259 -- Hailey Todoroff's 46 led all golfers as the visiting Mustangs improved to 7-3 at Tara Preserve.
