Sarasota truck driver killed

September 26, 2013

SARASOTA — A 42-year-old Sarasota man was killed Thursday after the truck he was driving caused a crash and rollover, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Patrick Thomas Harrel was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash after he was pinned under the truck on Interstate 75 between Bee Ridge and Clark Road exits at 9:47 a.m. The FHP is investigating whether alcohol was involved.

Harrel was reportedly driving in the right southbound lane when he veered across all southbound travel lanes. A 24-year-old Kissimmee man driving a Ford F-150 in the center lane swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid a crash.

The F-150, however, did run into the left side of the truck. Both trucks continued to slide across the southbound lanes, crashed into the cable barrier on the shoulder and overturned.

The truck came to rest in the median facing north, while the F-150 came to rest on its left side facing south.

A 36-year-old Sarasota male passenger in the truck received minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.

The left inside southbound lane of I-75 was closed during the investigation of the crash scene, according to the FHP website.
