LWR disaster training sets 3 sessions
LAKEWOOD RANCH -- Lakewood Ranch residents are invited to take part in the LWR CERT Disaster Training Program in October to learn emergency preparedness techniques.
There are 220 trained members of the Community Emergency Response Team, in Lakewood Ranch, and CERT is aiming for 300 members, according to organizer Dave Forgash.
"Unfortunately there are a few LWR neighborhoods that have no CERT members and therefore are without disaster training that may save lives and property," Forgash said in a media release
The training course includes sessions at Lakewood Ranch Town Hall from 7-9:30 p.m. Oct. 10; 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Oct. 12; 7-9:30 p.m. Oct. 17; and one from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 19 at the East Manatee Fire Rescue building, 3200 Lakewood Ranch Blvd. If you must miss a session, it can be made up at a later date to complete certification.
Topics will include disaster preparedness, medical treatment, disaster psychology and fire safety.

LWR-Sarasota Elks offering 500 college scholarships
LAKEWOOD RANCH -- The Lakewood Ranch-Sarasota Elks Lodge and the Elks National Foundation have launched a Most Valuable Student Scholarship contest to help local students pay for college.
Eighteen top national winners will be awarded scholarships ranging from $8,000 to $60,000, while the remaining 482 students will receive $4,000 scholarships.
The scholarship is available to all high school seniors who are U.S. citizens. Applicants do not need to be related to a member of the Elks. Males and females compete separately and are judged on scholarship, leadership and financial need.
