September 25, 2013

SARASOTA -- A masked gunman early Wednesday beat and robbed a clerk at a hotel on University Parkway, according to Sarasota police.

About 1 a.m., the clerk was doing her nightly paperwork in the sitting area of the Marriott Residence Inn at 1040 University Parkway, near Sarasota Bradenton International Airport, when the robber entered and showed a handgun, police said.

The robber demanded money, but the woman said no and tried to grab the gun. That's when the robber struck her on the left side of the head, causing injuries.

"The clerk fell to the ground and told officer she was in fear of being killed so she went with him to the front desk," a news release states.

The clerk unlocked the safe and gave the suspect an undisclosed amount of money. He then ordered her to the ground and told her not to move, according to police.

The gunman was described as being in his 20s, and standing 5 feet, 8 inches to 5 feet, 10 inches tall. He was last seen wearing a black baseball type hat with a white letter, a gray bandana covering his face and a black long sleeved shirt with a possible gray design on it or just a gray undershirt, black shorts and shoes.
