September 25, 2013

BRADENTON -- A motorist was seriously injured early Wednesday when he crashed into a semi-tractor trailer on Manatee Avenue West in Bradenton, according to Bradenton police.

About 3:56 a.m., the 18-wheeler had pulled into a car wash in order to back up to the Pinch-A-Penny store across the street at 3500 Manatee Ave. W., police said.

"A vehicle traveling eastbound attempted to drive around the stopped trailer that was blocking both eastbound lanes and the center turn lane," a report states. "The vehicle crashed with the trailer and was wedged under it."

Firefighters from the Bradenton Fire Department and West Manatee Fire and Rescue extricated the trapped driver, who was taken to Blake Medical Center in critical condition.

Police said the driver was in stable condition with a broken arm.

Manatee Avenue West was reopened to traffic almost two hours later, at 5:37 a.m., police said.
