Smart phones as documentary tools? Yes. The barn door is open and nobody wants to close it. The initial reluctance by some photojournalists to accept the Instagram, Twitter-picture, square-format trend has been washed away to be replaced with a whole-hearted embrace.
Some incredible, indelible images have been created through apps like Hipstamatic and Instagram. Street photography by Scott Strazzante of the Chicago Tribune documents the most common sights and transforms them into pure, visual joy.
Perusing the Instagram feeds of photojournalists around the world is like finding a new section of books at the library; delight!
Filters, frames and apps don't transform mediocrity into good photography, and overuse or ill use can easily go terribly wrong. But they are fun, and I think they're here to stay.
