Local roundup | Lakewood Ranch volleyball rallies for five-set victory over district rival Sarasota

Colleen Campbell ripped 17 kills, and Ashlyn Falahee had 15 Thursday as the Lakewood Ranch volleyball team ralled for a 21-25, 18-25, 25-17, 25-22, 15-9 victory over host Sarasota in Class 7A-District 10 play.

Kelly Ainsworth had 40 assists for the Mustangs, who improved to 11-3, 4-1 in the district.

BRADEN RIVER 3, PALMETTO 0 -- The Pirates won the Class 7A-District 10 match on the road despite 13 kills and 10 digs from the Tigers' Danielle Deterding.

White Canezo added 11 assists for Palmetto (2-7, 0-3). The Tigers won the junior varsity match 25-21, 25-19.

SAINT STEPHEN'S 3, BRADENTON CHRISTIAN 2 -- Lauren Biach had 10 kills and eight digs, and Bryce Liebel added 32 assists as the Falcons collected a 25-11, 22-25, 19-25, 25-20, 15-12 victory over the visiting Panthers on Thursday in Class 3A-District 10 play.

Saint Stephen's (3-9, 2-2) also got nine kills and nine digs from Cassandra Woodruff.

BCS fell to 2-6, 1-3 in the district despite eight kills from Jayme Haynes and six kills apiece from Alex Watson and Jill Newby.

Cross country

VIKING INVITATIONAL -- Sydney Britt, Katie Lanphere and Jessica Jones ran season-best times to lead the Manatee girls to third place out of 13 teams at the Viking Invitational at Crescent Lake Park in St. Petersburg.

Britt (13th, 22 minutes, 5 seconds), Lanphere (14th, 22:06) and Jones (15th 22:11) earned ribbons for top-15 finishes. The Hurricanes scored 89 points. Gulfport Boca Ciega won with 62 points, one fewer than Seminole Osceola.

Boys golf

MANATEE-SOUTHEAST -- The Hurricanes (2-6) won by default at IMG Academy when the Seminoles (0-6) brought just three players.

BAYSHORE TRI-MEET -- Sarasota Military Academy (119) defeated the host Bruins (174) and Palmetto (140) in a match shortened to six holes by lightning at Manatee Golf Club.

Cameron Creque led the Tigers (4-5) with a 32. Bayshore (0-5) got a 36 from Andrew Kurutz.

BRADENTON CHRISTIAN 166, CARDINAL MOONEY 199 -- Philip Knowles carded a 38 to lead the visiting Panthers (7-1) past the Cougars at the Meadows. Patrick Warren paced Cardinal Mooney (0-8) with a 45.

Girls golf

MANATEE 164, PALMETTO 206 -- The Tigers' Jessica McMillan shot a 2-over-par 34, but it wasn't enough to knock off the visiting Hurricanes at Terra Ceia Bay.

Gianna Tomeo and Leah Rothfeld each shot 39s to lead Manatee. Palmetto is 1-2.

LAKEWOOD RANCH TRI-MEET -- The Mustangs shot 207 to prevail over Sarasota (218) and the Saint Stephen's, which did not finish, at Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club.

Michelle Yan of Saint Stephen's took medalist honors with a 37. Theresa Morrissey led Lakewood Ranch with a 45, and Matkie Myers led Sarasota with a 47.

JV football

MANATEE 70, SOUTHEAST 0 -- Lorenz Allen and Raymond Thomas combined for five touchdowns and each rushed for more than 100 yards as the visiting Hurricanes rocked the Seminoles.

Allen scored three touchdowns, Thomas two. Connor Gulash rushed for a touchdown and passed for another, Aaron Wrona scored a pair of touchdowns, and Reggie McCarter and Tony Collins also notched scores for Manatee (4-0).
