Event willpromote petadoptions
MANATEE COUNTY -- Bayside Pet Resort is hosting the Dog Olympics & Adopt-a-thon Oct. 19.
The event, sponsored by Grow Financial Federal Credit Union, will focus on finding homes for cats and dogs at local rescue groups and animal shelters. The adoption goal is to find homes for at least 100 dogs and cats.
Dogs of all breeds are invited to participate in non-athletic competitions such as howling contest, shedding contest, Olympic-inspired costume contest and best trick. Olympic medals will be given to the gold, silver and bronze winners of each game.
The event will include pet-related vendors, a cooling corner for dogs, raffle prizes, free photos provided by Walgreens, face painting, hot dogs and refreshments.
The Dog Olympics & Adopt-a-thon will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bayside Pet Resort, 8154 N. Tamiami Trail.
Admission is free. To participate in the contest, registration is $3 per Olympic game or purchase a $15 Olympic dog bandana for unlimited Olympic games. Register your dog at the event or at humanemanatee.org.
Participating shelters and rescue groups include: Humane Society of Manatee County, Manatee County Animal Services, Bishop Animal Shelter, Gulf Shore Animal League, Royal Pet Rescue, Humane Society at Lakewood Ranch, Canine Castaways, Safe Haven Animal Rescue, Almost Home Dog Rescue.
Proceeds will benefit the Humane Society of Manatee County.

Once Upon a Dog has leased 1,738 square feet of retail space at 6646 Cortez Road W. in Bradenton in the Cortez Village shopping plaza. Exit Sunset Realty has leased 2,204 square feet of retail space at 6620 Cortez Road W. in Bradenton in the Cortez Village shopping plaza. Angela Varga with Sperry Van Ness Commercial Advisory Group handled both transactions.
JSA Healthcare Inc. has leased 3,597 square feet of office space located at 2424 Manatee Ave. W., Suite 100, Bradenton. Cooper handled the transaction.
New York Times Co. to start paying dividends
NEW YORK -- The New York Times Co. announced Thursday that it would pay a dividend to its shareholders for the first time in five years.
The company approved a dividend of 4 cents per share to all shareholders of record as of Oct. 9, 2013.
The Times has not paid a dividend since Dec. 14, 2008.
