Food Bank Drive starting to thrive
MANATEE -- Local organizations, businesses and neighborhood groups have already raised more than $74,000 and collected more than 10,700 pounds of food as part of this year's Grand Challenge to restock the shelves at the Food Bank of Manatee, according to county officials.
Local businesses have raised $33,000, Rotary clubs of Manatee have pledged a combined $11,500 and the Manatee Community Foundation has pledged $30,000.
The Mosaic Company Foundation will match up to $100,000, dollar-for-dollar or pound-for-pound, of food raised during this year's challenge.
More than 90 groups are participating in the September-long community food and fundraiser to benefit the Food Bank.
A Manatee County government leadership team meeting last week netted 1 ton of food, county officials said.
Organizers say more is needed to help feed local families and it's not too late for businesses and groups to participate.
