NOKOMIS -- The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office fielded the dominant team Saturday at the 2013 Southwest Florida Region VI SWAT Training Competition at Knight Trail Park in Nokomis.

Fourteen teams from the FBI and law enforcement agencies in Sarasota, Collier, Highlands, Lee, Charlotte and Manatee counties competed in four roundup-style events, and the top five teams were:

1. Sarasota County Sheriff's Office -- Gold Team;

2. Sarasota County Sheriff's Office -- Green Team;

3. Cape Coral Police Department;

4. Manatee County Sheriff's Office; and

5. Collier County Sheriff's Office.

The team taking the top spot in all four individual events was the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office Gold Team.

The competition brings together SWAT teams from around the region to train together and become familiar with each other before an incident occurs. Events are designed to test marksmanship, following procedures and rules, teamwork and physical fitness.

The competition was supported by the Florida SWAT Association, a number of tactical supply companies and local businesses.
