Sheriff: Drunk driver crashes into deputy's patrol car in Sarasota

September 18, 2013

SARASOTA -- A Venice man has been arrested on drunken driving and other charges after he crashed into the back of a patrol car Wednesday morning and tried to drive away, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.

About 8:07 a.m., the deputy was at Center Road and Rockley Boulevard when another car struck the rear of the deputy's car, and then drove around the car and tried to leave the scene. The deputy was not hurt, according to a news release.

The driver, John Tauber, 26, smelled of alcohol and nearly fell over into traffic, according to the report.

"Tauber was extremely belligerent to deputies, claimed he hadn’t been drinking and refused to perform standard field sobriety tests. However, once he was taken to jail he took the breath test and blew a .353 and .365, more than four times the legal limit," the report states.

Tauber is charged with DUI with breath alcohol content above .15, DUI with property damage and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage. He is being held at the Sarasota County jail on bonds totaling $2,620.
