A deadly standoff: 2 fatally shot in Miami-Dade, 2 killed in crash in Broward

MIAMI -- A man plowed a two-county path of death and destruction Wednesday — shooting a mother and daughter in their South Miami Heights home, speeding north with police in pursuit from the air and the ground, crashing into an innocent motorist on Krome Avenue in western Broward — before shooting himself during an armed standoff.

In the end, four people were dead: the mother and daughter, the motorist who had the misfortune of intersecting with the gunman at Griffin Road and Krome, and the gunman himself.

The man was identified in news reports as Antonio Felix.

The incident began as a domestic dispute in the South Miami Heights neighborhood in the 12300 block of Southwest 190th Street.

Two women, Vivian Martinez, 51, and her 28-year-old daughter Anabel Benitez, were shot about 10 a.m. Martinez died at the scene and Benitez was rushed to Kendal Memorial Hospital, where she also died, police said.

The gunman’s black Mercedes crossover vehicle was spotted by police on Krome Avenue a short time later. A pursuit ensued, northbound on U.S. 27, with the gunman speeding far ahead of police, at times at speeds in excess of 100 mph, swerving off the road, past tractor-trailers and other vehicles. The vehicle continued in a high-speed attempted getaway, when suddenly it smashed broadside into another vehicle.

Several shots were fired at arriving police officers, who were unable to immediately reach the accident victim. One Broward Sheriff’s deputy, however, did risk his life by running over to the woman to see if she was still alive. She died at the scene, however.

A Broward sheriff’s SWAT team, —joined by other SWAT teams from Davie, Pembroke Pines and Miami-Dade — surrounded the car, along with 50 other police and emergency vehicles.

Shortly after 11 a.m., police threw a canister, called a baton, at the vehicle, shattering the rear windshield. They saw the gunman slumped over the steering wheel, apparently dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
