MANATEE -- At 5:37 a.m. on July 3, a man jumped over the counter at the Walgreens store located at 6003 14th St. W., grabbed four cartons of Newport cigarettes and rushed to make a getaway.
Video of the incident revealed to authorities that the suspect was a man wearing a black shirt, black shorts and sandals.
But what also helped authorities was that the store clerk was coming back into the store just when the suspect was leaving and the suspect grabbed the clerk and pushed her, which was caught on video, according to a Manatee County Sheriff's Office report.
After almost three months of investigation, on Monday deputies arrested Edward D. Barbour, 44. and charged him burglary, the report states.
A photo lineup was presented for the store clerk who was unable to identify anyone, according to the report.
But after his arrest, Barbour told detectives that he was the person in the video and that he had an addiction to crack cocaine and, as a result of the addiction, committed this crime, the report states.
"Edward was very cooperative and truthful during the interview," the detective wrote in his report.
Barbour, who faces earlier charges for an unrelated case, is being held without bond in the Manatee County jail, according to the sheriff's office website.
