Sept. 21: The Firearms Training Institute of Sarasota will host an NRA First Steps Pistol Course on Sept. 21 at the AmericInn Hotel conference room, 5931 Fruitville Road, Sarasota. The class starts at 8 a.m. The course will be taught by local NRA certified instructors and cover the basics of safe gun handling and shooting. The four-hour course will emphasize the safe and proper handling and use of pistols. Participants will learn about firearm safety, parts and operation, shooting fundamentals, maintenance, storage options and more. This course meets the Florida training requirements for Concealed Carry Permit applicants. Non-residents are eligible. Oct. 12-13: The Project Appleseed rifle marksmanship clinic will be held 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 12-13 at the Manatee Gun and Archery Club, 1805 Logue Rd., Myakka City. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Participants will be taught fundamental rifle marksmanship skills that allow a rifleman to be accurate out to 400 yards, with iron sights, a standard rifle and surplus ammunition. Most of the instruction at a Project Appleseed event is conducted on the firing range at 25 yards, at reduced size targets to simulate 100 to 400 yards. Students will learn safe gun handling, proper use of a rifle sling and Revolutionary War history. Please bring own ear/eye protection, a rifle with sling, ammunition, rifle mat, bug repellent, hat, sunscreen, a packed lunch, snacks, drinks and plenty of water. A .22-caliber rifle is recommended due to the cost of ammunition, but you can use a centerfire rifle if preferred. About 250 rounds of ammunition will be needed per day. The fees are $50 for one day/$80 for two days for adult males $20/$40 for adult females, $10/$20 for youth younger than 18 or youth free per paying adult. Active military, Guard and Reserve, law enforcement officers with ID, disabled, elected officials and Revolutionary War re-enactors in costume are admitted free. Oct. 19-20: Junior golfers ages 11-18 are invited to compete in the Arrowhead Scholarship Classic on Oct. 19-20 in Point Clear, Ala., at the Lakewood Golf Club. The 2-day, 36-hole tournament is ranked by the Junior Golf Scoreboard and hosted by the Arrowhead Junior Golf Tour. The entry fee is $225.00 and includes two days of green fees, tee gifts and trophies in four age divisions. The registration deadline is noon Oct. 16th. Oct. 26: Mangrove Coast Fly Fishers and the Sarasota Chapter of Coastal Conservation Association will hold their ninth annual "Fall Fly Fishing Challenge" on Oct. 26. The catch, photo and release, fly fishing only event will feature an Open Division, for guides and anglers fishing with guides (all anglers are eligible to compete in the Open Division), and a Fly Angler Division (no guides). In the Open Division, eligible species include snook, redfish and spotted sea trout. Those in the Fly Angler Division will fish for a variety of species, including snook, redfish, spotted sea trout, bluefish, ladyfish, flounder, snapper, jack crevalle, pompano and permit based on a point-per-inch system. The entry fee is $50 and includes an awards barbecue dinner following the tournament at the Meadows Country Club Community Room, 3101 Longmeadow, Sarasota. There will be an angler meeting at 7:30 p.m. Oct 25 at Harry's Sports Bar and Grill, 6606 S. Jan. 18-19: Registrations are being accepted for the 2014 Manatee County Lacrosse Shoot-Out to be held Jan. 18-19 at Lakewood Ranch. The event is an open club event for all school, recreation and club teams within the Southeast Atlantic region. The tournament features round-robin competition, with all teams guaranteed five games. Competition levels of A and B are available for both boys and girls teams between the ages of 9 and 18.
