Bradenton Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts to close

Chain sending customers to University Town Center

BAYSHORE GARDENS -- Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts' Bayshore Gardens Shopping Center store will soon close.

The store, 6040 14th St. W., is undergoing a store closing sale, according to the signs at the store, and markdowns on merchandise have already begun. Jo-Ann is expected to close around Nov. 7, according to a store employee.

Customers are being sent to the Shoppes at University Town Center location, 8441 Cooper Creek Blvd., which opened in 2012.

The Hudson, Ohio-based chain is the nation's largest fabric store and one of the largest craft retailers, and recently faced competition from Bradenton newcomer Hobby Lobby at 4490 Cortez Road in May.

Bayshore Gardens Shopping Center is anchored by a Publix and a Target, and leased by Kimco Realty.

Jo-Ann's Bradenton management and Ohio officials did not return requests seeking comment. Kimco's corporate policy prevents property manager Douglas Fischer from commenting on leases within the shopping center.
