BRADENTON -- A man slashed one victim on the hand with a pocket knife and threatened another as he tried to steal a cast net from the carport of a Bradenton home Friday night, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

One of the victims heard a loud noise in the carport of the home in the 3700 block of 14th Street West around 9:05 p.m., deputies said. He found the suspect, 44-year-old Artis Muhammads, trying to leave with his cast net, according a sheriff's report.

The victim chased after Muhammads and a brief struggle ensued, during which Muhammads allegedly pulled out a pocket knife and cut the victim on his left thumb.

The suspect then fled, still being chased by a second victim from the home. Muhammads threatened that victim with the knife as well, the sheriff's office said.

Numerous deputies responded and with 15 minutes of the call located Muhammads, who was identified by both victims and arrested.

Muhammads was booked in Manatee County jail on charges of armed burglary, aggravated battery and aggravated assault with arrest. He was being held on $200,000 bond.
