UNIVERSITY PARK -- The Sarasota area's first Orangetheory Fitness, known for its one-hour group training workouts, opened Friday at 5275 University Parkway, Unit #116.

"We think that the clientele in Sarasota is ready for Orangetheory. It's new, it's hip, it's up-and-coming and Sarasota is a well-known area and can hold the demographic as far as the cost," said Troy Taylor, Orangetheory regional director of operations for the west coast of Florida. Taylor predicts that there could one day be three to five locations in the Sarasota area.

The Orangetheory workout consists of cardio exercises and strength training using treadmills, rowing machines, suspension training and free weights. Each 50-minute class -- there are 55 each week -- serves up to 24 people. Clients cannot work out in the studio unless they are part of a class.

Orangetheory touts that anyone can do the workouts, regardless of stamina.

"Anybody that has a heart can jump into a class. They're just working at their own fitness level," Taylor said, adding that his mother, who is close to 80, did a class early Friday morning.

"We can let people understand that it's not about your age. It's about making a change to take care of your body and heart," he said.

Each work out is expected to burn between 500 and 1,200 calories.

The studio will hold month-long grand opening membership specials.
