Lakewood Ranch man wanted in Sarasota caught in Virginia with help of social media

SARASOTA -- A Lakewood Ranch man wanted by police was captured in Virginia with the help of social media, according to the Sarasota Police Department.

Christopher Schenks is accused of stealing computer equipment from a girlfriend and selling it at a Sarasota pawn shop, according to a news release.

Sarasota police had been looking for Schenks since June 2012. Recently one of Schenks family members saw his photo listing him as wanted on one of the Sarasota Police Department's social media sites and called detectives. Schenks was arrested in Bluefield, Va., and faces charges there as well.

His charges in Sarasota include dealing in stolen property and giving false information to a pawn broker.

"Again, thanks to social media and a relative in Florida monitoring the web site and relaying the information to the suspect's family in Virginia, we were able to find and arrest Christopher Schenks," Detective Darrell Nixon said in a police statement.
