MANATEE --- The Manatee County School District plans to hire 85 additional teachers for the 2013-2014 school year based on enrollment growth recorded in the first 10 days of the year.

In a news release Thursday, the district said the addition of 950 students requires the addition of 55 classroom teachers. An additional 30 elementary school teachers will be hired to meet Florida class-size requirements.

The addition of 950 students will result in the hiring of 55 classroom teachers. An additional 30 elementary school teachers will be hired to meet state Class-Size Amendment requirements.

"One primary factor impacting projected growth in the school district is the expected influx of migrant students who often arrive in the school district after the school year starts," the district said.

The announcement comes about three months after the district laid off 182 teachers as part of its efforts to make up for a large deficit in the current school budget. At the time, district officials said they were projecting student enrollment growth this fall would be minimal.

Hiring the additional teachers will cost about $4.3 million, of which $2.1 million will come from the state; $1.2 million in additional Title I funding from the federal government; and $1 million already built into the 2013-14 budge.

Additional information about the hirings is being discussed Thursday afternoon in a public hearing on the proposed budget.
