Authorities say a 20-year-old Palmetto man and his girlfriend stopped the silver Jeep they were driving in the 700 block of Whitefield Avenue East at 5:04 a.m. Monday and put on the vehicle flashers.
A Manatee County Sheriffs Office deputy pulled behind them thinking they were motorists in distress but the Jeep immediately began driving away. The deputy followed the Jeep to the 7-Eleven store at 224 Pearl Ave.
Once there the female driver told the deputy they put on the flashers because her boyfriend, Roosevelt Brooks Jr., lost his cell phone in the vehicle.
When the deputy knocked on Brooks Jr.s window, Brooks lowered it and the deputy reportedly smelled the strong odor of marijuana.
Brooks, who allegedly told deputies the marijuana was his, was charged with possessing controlled substances without a prescription.
Brooks was arrested Monday and released the same day after posting a $2,000 bond, according to the sheriffs office website.
