Cardinal Mooney routs BCS

The Cougars scored five times in their first nine plays to breeze past the host Panthers 49-7 in a Kickoff Classic.

Cardinal Mooney's speedy tailback, Demardre Patterson, tallied two touchdowns, and quarterback Reese Vita tossed a pair of touchdown passess, including one to Austin Leach, before some of the younger players were inserted to keep up the Cougars scoring.

"We got off to a great start," Cardinal Mooney head coach Josh Smithers said. "And the defense was pretty good."

PUNTA GORDA CHARLOTTE 41, BAYSHORE 19 -- Quarterback Brennan McGill threw four touchdown passes and Jakhi Roberts ran for 124 yards, including a spectacular 70-yard touchdown as the host Tarpons cruised to the win.

Bayshore showed signs of life late. Dereck Williams plunged in midway throught he third quarter to put the Bruins on the board at 35-6. After Jyndon Bernard recovered a Tarpon fumble, Obi Tarwoe caught a seven-yard TD pass from Jackson to make it 35-12.

After Ty Tyler caught McGill's fourth TD of the night from 17 yards out to make it 41-12, Tarwoe ran back the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a score late in the third quarter to end the scoring.

But it was too little too late for Bayshore head coach Elijah Freeman as he saw his team scorched for 446 yards of total offense.

"There was a loss of confidence, some breakdowns and then we had to correct some things and do the things that worked for us in the first half,"

Williams had 115 yards rushing for Bayshore. Troy Keys added 48.

LARGO PINELLAS PARK 21, BRADEN RIVER 7 -- The Patriots took the lead in the third quarter then put away the visiting Pirates in Kickoff Classic action.

After Braden River scored on the second play from scrimmage in the second quarter, the Patriots used a variety of backs to sustain a second-quarter drive and tied the score on Oscee Calhoun's 20-yard run.

BRANDON 23, LAKEWOOD RANCH 21 -- Allen Lewis caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Jones with 58 seconds remaining to cap a late rally as the host Eagles edged the Mustangs.

A'Shawn Angel ran 2 yards for his third touchdown of the game as the Mustangs pushed their lead to 21-10 with 9:45 left in the fourth quarter.

Lakewood Ranch drove into Brandon territory in the final minute and attempted a 51-yard field goal for the win, but it was blocked by as time expired.

Quarterback Chad Rex rushed for 110 of his 144 yards in the first half as the Mustangs built a 14-7 lead. Angel broke several tackles on the way to a 25-yard score with 8 minutes left in the second quarter to open the scoring and also ran 5 yards for a touchdown 5:10 later.

SAINT STEPHEN'S 27, ORLANDO CHRISTIAN PREP 0 -- Quarterback Sam Dages completed all six of his pass attempts in the first half to stake the visiting Falcons to a 20-0 lead as Saint Stephen's won a Kickoff Classic.

Dages connected with Nick Rodhouse on a 22-yard touchdown pass and scored on a one-yard sneak. Luc Goeders scored the only first-half touchdown on a two-yard run.

The game was delayed by one hour, 45 minutes at halftime by lightning. Jordan Murrell capped the scoring with a five-yard run.

Saint Stephen's got an interception from Peter Smith and fumble recoveries from Goeders and Garrett Barnes.

NAPLES FIRST BAPTIST ACADEMY 52, ODA 6 -- David Grain scored from 6 yards out for the visiting Thunder's only score.
