Vin's People: Hoopsters got nice assist from donors

August 16, 2013

National champions, take a bow.

The Palmetto Youth Center's Trojans hoopsters are the USSSA 17-and-Under Division 2's top team in America.

The champs are Nick Buto, Tre Clark, Terry Collins, Brandon Drake, Kyle Edwards, Kahlil Garcia, Keiwon Jackson, Jarrid Rhodes, Stepvon Saunders, Christian Zanders and Dequon Washington.

Coach Reggie Bellamy's charges' shining moment came at USSSA nationals last weekend in Kansas City, Mo. In the title game, the Trojans defeated Topeka, Kan., 58-50, the only team they lost to in round-robin tournament play.

They qualified for nationals by winning the USSSA Southeast Regional championship last month in Suwanee, Ga.

Big ups, as well, to all the generous folks around the community whose donations enabled the PYC to fly the team to K.C.

"We cannot thank them enough," said Executive Director Chris Lukowiak.
