Water rescue distinguishes Manatee Employee of Month

Herald staff reportJuly 30, 2013

— Christopher Foy is has been named Employee of the Month for July by the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

Foy and his brother, Christopher, were fishing June 22 from the sea walls in Big Pass, Sarasota, when they heard someone screaming for help.

The Foys saw a subject in distress caught in the swift outgoing current. Foy dove into the water to rescue the subject while his brother went to summon help.

Foy reached the subject and discovered he had been in a jet-ski accident and suffered a fractured femur.

Foy swam to a rock jetty and continued to keep the subject’s head above water using his body as a shield to minimize the wave impact. EMS was able to lower a back board down to Foy and his brother, who secured the victim, who was then hoisted to safety.

“The outcome of this incident would not have been the same without Christopher’s selflessness, courage, and quick action. For his rapid and vital response,” said Sheriff Brad Steube.
