Gallery: July 29, 2013: Skating through life

pvidela@bradenton.comJuly 29, 2013

Meet Ken and Sybil Gavins. Most Wednesday mornings you can find the pair of young-at-heart seniors holding hands as they glide across the wood-paneled floors at Astro Skate in Bradenton. The Gavins, well into their 80s, are just two of a group of adult roller skaters who look forward to the socializing and exercise they get every week at the rink. And with the oldest among them ringing in at a robust 94 years of age, one thing they're not short on is moxie. I'd wager a bet that people half that age would think twice about hitting the rink. But for these lifelong roller skaters, it's not about the risk, it's all about the rewards (not to mention the coffee and donuts). Oh, and about Ken and Sybil -- they've been married 57 years. For this casual observer, here's living proof that couples who skate together stay together!
