Business briefs: Manatee Memorial lauded for heart attack care

July 27, 2013

Manatee Memorial Hospital has received the American Heart Association's Mission: Lifeline Bronze Receiving Quality Achievement Award.

The award recognizes Manatee Memorial Hospital's commitment and success in implementing a high standard of care for heart attack patients.

Each year in the United States, nearly 300,000 people have the most severe form of heart attack, which occurs when a blood clot completely blocks an artery to the heart. To prevent death, it's critical to immediately restore blood flow, either by surgically opening the blocked vessel or by giving clot-busting medication.

Hospitals involved in Mission: Lifeline are part of a system that makes sure such patients get the care they need, as quickly as possible. Mission: Lifeline focuses on improving the system of care for these patients and at the same time improving care for all heart attack patients.

Bradenton Chick-fil-A set to open

Bradenton's second stand-alone Chick-fil-A restaurant will open Aug. 1, bringing more than 75 new jobs and the chance for 100 adults to win free Chick-fil-A meals for a year.

Chick-fil-A's "First 100" event has become the cornerstone of every Chick-fil-A grand opening.

The new Bradenton restaurant, 4573 14th St. W., will be the scene of the latest grand opening celebration. The first 100 adults, ages 18 and older with identification, in line when the doors open at 6 a.m. on Aug. 1, each will win 52 coupons for a Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich, medium waffle fries and a medium drink -- a total of more than $30,000 in free food.

The line officially opens at 6 a.m., July 31, with the free meal cards being awarded Thursday, Aug. 1, about 6 a.m. The restaurant will open for business immediately thereafter. If there are more than 100 people by 6 a.m. on Wednesday, July 31, all 100 spots will be determined by a drawing held that morning with those selected needing to camp out to secure their spot.

Humbled and surprised by the dedication of its fans, Chick-fil-A implemented the "First 100" at every grand opening and in the past 10 years has given away more than $18 million in free food at almost 700 grand openings. An additional $2.5 million is slated to be given away at 91 grand openings this year.

For 10 years, Chick-fil-A has hosted the parking lot parties, providing security, entertainment and, of course, plenty of Chick-fil-A to its dedicated fans.

Bradenton's first Chick-fil-A opened in 1977 in Desoto Square Mall and its first stand-alone restaurant opened in 2001 off 73rd Lane East.

Barbecue, bluegrass and beer at Bridge St. event

The Bridge Street Merchants are hosting Barbecue, Beer & Bluegrass Aug.

3 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Bradenton Beach on Anna Maria Island. Organizers suggest using the free island trolley which runs until 10:30 p.m.

Barbecue, Beer & Bluegrass, 117 Bridge Street, is free to the public and will take place in the lot used for the Sunday Markets and the Summer Saturday evening markets adjacent to Fish Hole Adventure Golf.

"With fewer art and craft vendors, there will be plenty of space for folks to bring their own blankets and chairs and sit back and enjoy the band with a cold beer and tasty BBQ," said Melissa Enders, event coordinator.

The band, Stumble Creek Station, has played on Anna Maria Island once before and has a big following at throughout Tampa and St. Pete.
