Vin's People: Marty the Marauder needs our votes

July 26, 2013

Vote for Marty the Marauder!

The Bradenton Marauders' entertaining mascot has thrown his tri-corner hat back in the race in minor league baseball's Mascot Mania and needs our community's help at the polls.

The first round of voting ends Aug. 1 and Marty is up against tough Florida State League competition. Phinley of the Clearwater Threshers was a national semifinalist last year.

• The Carl Weeks Farewell Tour continues. The retiring Boys & Girls Clubs of Manatee County president will be honored July 30 with Carl Weeks Night at McKechnie Field.

He'll show off his surgically repaired right shoulder when he throws out the first pitch before the Ms' 6:30 p.m. start against Dunedin. And since it's also Kids Club Night, the 64-years-young Weeks may run the bases with them after the game, too.

Plus, $1 from each ticket will go to the Carl Weeks Great Futures Fund to support the operational needs of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Manatee County.

• How many former students of Mary Westendick remember the longtime kindergarten teacher, who taught at Samoset Elementary School from 1954 to 1991?

They'll be sad to know "Miss Mary" is moving back to Tallahassee where she grew up.

• Big ups to coach Reggie Bellamy's Palmetto Youth Center Trojans basketball team.

They were the 17-& Under-Division 2 champions at the recent USSSA Southeast Region Championships in Suwanee, Ga.

That qualified them for nationals in Kansas City, Aug. 9-11 and PYC officials are raising funds to help get them there.
